BZP (a site that does "Respect the Brick") has put pics up of the Death Star, looks really good! I just wish they made this pre-2004 Mad

http://bzpower.com/story.php?ID=2243

I wonder how much those SW VIP Gala sets will go for on ebay? And if anybody would actually sell one of them!

Ehh, speaking of... See it's stuff like this the community could do without... I just don't get why people feel the need to knock the "other" sites; it certainly doesn't make us look any better. Sorry to hijack, just had to get that off my chest.

Sad

It looks cool. And it comes with a MINI Super Star Destroyer! I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay $300 for it though (the rumoured price) like I did with the Star Destroyer.

It was not my intent to "knock" any other site; I was meerly commenting that their photographs weren't particularly good.

Please stop being so hypersensitive to posts, and intimating that there are hidden agendas where there are none.

Yeah, it's not quite as impressive as the Star Destroyer, but it still looks good. It's nice to see that LEGO is taking a chance; hopefully it'll pay off for them.

I'm not sure what the big commotion is all about. In my opinion, this Death Star looks like it could fall apart at any minute. What is up with all that (what looks like) loose paneling? From my recollection, the completed side of the Death Star is supposed to look like a smoother sphere / ball, not separate panels with lots of holes in between. Personally, I think Lego could do a lot better than this "holey" model.

I beg to differ and say the pics were better on the other site. But whatever, I guess these are ok. It's going to be a major bley parts pack... but really, it looks like too much of the same pieces.

So, Vikings is coming out in january 2006, I guess.

Blech. I like wedge plates and all, but this is just ugly. Plus it looks kind of dull to build. The only way I'd buy it was if it was classic grey; to stock up on parts.

It is pretty much exactly what I expected. I'm not sure what people who got excited about this set were envisioning.

I thought that a UCS death star would actually be really cool, but to be honest, the pictures are very disappointing. I think that LEGO could have done a much better job on this set and what I have heard on other sites, it sounds like LEGO is going to have a very difficult time on passing this set off at $300. I was hoping that the next $300 set would have been a UCS falcon, but what can you do!

cool, but not 300 dollars cool, plus it doesn't even look big enough to be that expensive. I can't afford UCS anyways so no worries for me.

. . . a ball made of Legos.

What did people really expect from Lego corporation in regards to a Death Star?

Sure, Im not happy with it, but with my completist urge, Ill probably snatch it as soon as possible.

Thought I'd try my hand at this:

This is based on what I could see in the pics that Onions posted to FBTB.net. If I'm right, it's got a total of 28 pieces. I choose to display it on a stand instead of the clear plastic pole because, good golly, i don't have a Death Star built up yet. Wink

This is all done in old greys, and the only thing I didn't get right in terms of colors is the middle piece, not sure what to call it either (I used a black one I had, not grey like in the pics). And on the subject of color, it seems to me that, in Onions pics, the MINI on display contains BOTH grey and bley!

Anyway, here's two more pics:

Wowowowow! Iīm impressed with that UCS DS! More than impressed! And no new parts! No new, round parts? Strange. But the superlaser is Great!

With ISD comes RBR, and with DS comes SSD! Nice idea from LEGO!

Well... it's as nice as an almost round collection of blocks can be. It's kind nifty but not worth the price they'll ask for it.

Rather underwhelming. Pretty much what I expected, though. I will be very suprised if this sells well. I think LEGO would have been better off making a much smaller model.

The ISD was the perfect choice fot this typ of model - straight, flat planes and hard angles. A ball is probably the most difficult thing to render in LEGO and the best results I've seen are still somewhat lacking.

I'm also wary of the (rumored) Sandcrawler. I think lego would have been better off building something in the $40-$70 range. Let's face it, it's just a big brown box! I think what most people really want are Jawas. It would suck to have to shell out $150 to get Jawas. I will probably pass on this even if the set is excellent.

Here's the key difference between the ISD and DS2;

1. The ISD (ship, not set) looks cool. The Death Star, while iconic and menacing, doesn't really look cool in that "want it in my living room" kinda way. The ISD fly-by's are some of my favorite scenes in the old movies. The Death Star-hovering-in-the-background-not-really-doing-anything shots not so much.

2. Building a gigantic spaceship is always more satisfying than building a giant ball. That's why there's so many more giant spaceships than spheres on brickshelf.

3. People who don't even like SW bought the ISD because of its abundance of grey plates and technic beams. While some people are trying to amass collections of bley, they're a tiny minority compared to the people who want those same parts in classic grey. Honestly, that's the only way I can see this selling well at all; if it's classic grey.

There is one new part on the DS2, btw; the 10x10 radar dish on top.

Oh boy.. big disappointment for me. I really don't like the way the panels lay out to form the sphere. I guess the only way to make it "smoother" would have been to make it much larger (and therefore hugely expensive).

I will pick it up when it hits the clearance shelves...

I meant that figuratively -- should have said s&h clearance (eg Darth Maul)

Well it all depends on how well it sells. If it doesn't do well it will go on sale (like Darth Maul), but if it does sell (like the Star Destroyer) it probably won't go on sale for ages.

when the idea of a ucs death star first popped up on these forums, i thought it would make a horrible model. giant grey ball with a dimple, whoop de doo. i thought if anything, a death star II would be slightly more interesting, but like how golf ball is slightly more interesting than a ping pong ball.

seeing it in person, i was a little underwhelmed. not sure if this was the way to go for the next item in the ucs line.

i'll tell you one thing though, it is an immediate solution to filling up on bley plates.

I have to say it looks kinda neat - except for the whole non-spherical issue.. Wink

Doesn't compare to this one, though: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=19001
Or even this:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=91944

(neither are mine, of course)
