As I said in the "official" Death Star thread, I have attempted to reconstruct LEGO's Death Star using the available media (ex. Gizmodo's pics, vid. on Youtube, pics on Brickshelf, etc.). As of yet, I have completed the base of the first floor. And to all those people who said it would cost hundreds of dollars to construct- I don't have a huge collection, and it's only cost me $10.00 so far. Now, as I go on, you will probably notice color issues, primarily with the walls. If it becomes to drastic, these will be rectified with some 10 or 20 dollar Bricklink purchases. Anyway, on with the pics!
Overall:

Hmm, seems to be coming along pretty well I think. Though it's still very early in the build. Good luck with the rest of it. _________________

Flynn, that thing could be bright pink and I'd love it. The fact that you're making it on you're own is so admirable. I hope you manage to get it all done.
I guess it's a blessing that it is such an open set. _________________

That looks great so far!
Can you tell me how high it is in the middle (the dark grey/red parts)?
I have a few problems recognizing it, if it is all bricks or 1-2 layers of plates as well.
I started building the throne room today. I need to do a bricklink order soon, but else - have a look:

Thanks for the comments!
Mera_Bassil: I will be sure to do that. I suspect that I'll have to make another couple Bricklink purchases, but it's mostly just standard bricks, so who knows how much it'll cost me.
Andi: Good work on the throne room so far! I hope to see more! Also, I had the same problem identifing the height of the base when I was using the Gizmodo pics, but the whole height is 5 bricks, if I believe.
New update!
I built a wall:
(I realized just after taking pictures that I left out a doorway in the upper right corner, oh well)
As well as the trash compacter:
There's color problems everywhere, and I pretty much screwed up the whole hinge thing with the compacter, but other than that, it's coming along pretty well. I do have one problem, though:
I can't figure out how to work the compacter; to make it"compact". If anyone's figured out how LEGO did this, please let me know, I just can't figure it out.
Here's the gallery (With the Gizmodo pics I've been using- I can't find them on Gizmodo anymore)-

Thanks for the picture, Andi, I think that'll help . Also, I don't mind if you post your building process here as well, nor do I mind if anyone else building 10188 wants to post pictures in this thread; it doesn't really make sense to have 50 threads for building the Death Star. _________________ Well, time to face the new world at FBTB II...

Good job so far! Except for the color problems, you're doing a lot better than I am. My Death Star is unfortunately sitting in a corner wasting away, so I probably won't be updating it anytime soon. Oh, well. _________________ Well, time to face the new world at FBTB II... |

Some more progress, plus a rebuilt door. At first I just had included the Control Center door from the old B-Wing Set. But I wasn't very satisfied with that.
And additionally I had to rebuild the whole floor. I had built it 'room' for 'room', but after putting it all together it wasn't very stable. So now every floor is one complete piece

Cool. First thing I think of is "Ghetto Star" The Empire had to make some budget cuts durring the construction process.
But still pretty good with just using bricks lying around. _________________

Using the inventory in the back of the instructions, I was able to find out how many light gray bricks are in the lot...and there's plenty. Among the numbers are 43 bricks 2 x 2, 72 plates 2 x 3, and 76 plates 2 x 4. I'll probably be making a trip to Bricklink pretty soon.
EDIT: Okay, why the heck did I post this? It is completely unrelated to anything posted. _________________ Well, time to face the new world at FBTB II...

I put tiles into two sections and built the detention area.
I didn't use much of the instructions, and already modded the detention area a lot (especially Leia's cell).

Those death star MOD's are really excellent, but I was wondering how your going to get around the tractor beam thing. I don't think enough time was spent working this out, infact it's a rush job. There are better custom ones that would clearly fit into the space provided on the Lego Death star and although like you I've been working on a custom version, mine's on a Lego bricks simulator. If you want I'll put in on brickshelf but it's not finished yet.
I just wanted to know how you solved this problem, regards Marty
Ps. 1 month to go
Update, here are the pictures the 3 along the bottom.

I haven't thought about the tractor beam yet.
Would be great if you share any ideas _________________ ~Andi

I have the feeling I completed it.
I needed over a month and it was a lot of fun! Great build. And amazing how much I could do with my small collection of pieces. Sure, some Bricklink orders were necessary, but all together below $100 including shipping. And most times more parts ordered than needed.
To 99% I built it from the pics which were available in the internet. Yes, I had the instructions once, but as soon as I realised that the link was removed, I deleted the instructions. I didn't want to use leaked things for building this great set.
Click the picture for the complete photo folder
Maybe I will mod it a little bit more. For example a pathway to the tractor beam would be nice. _________________ ~Andi

If we weren't complete strangers, didn't live thousands of miles apart and in other countries and weren't both already married, I'd marry you, Andi.
Very nice job on this. It looks really accurate. |

Yes, jolly good show. That's a fine piece of engineering if I ever did see such a thing.
Awesome work Andi. How much will you charge if someone asks you to build one for them (minus the minifigs)? _________________ FBTB: The Final Chapter

|
|
Hi everyone,
I've been trying to figure out how to make a Lego-build turn table / swivel base sturdy enough to support the weight of the new Death Star. Unfortunately the model is a good 20 lbs (~9 kg) and I haven't come up with any good ideas. This is, I'm sad to say, a little beyond my Lego building know-how. I could modify the stand for the 10143 UCS Death Star - but it won't swivel / turn around. If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!! _________________
