Had a small debate about how LEGO should be pronounced. I guess after watching several old American LEGO commercials on youtube I am still not sure, if we are as precise as the student I was talking with. He believed it is Leh-go and I am pretty sure it is Lay-go. I am more curious how the Danish words LEg-GOdt are pronounced. If someone has a link to a video that has one of our Danish speakers pronouncing both "LEGO" and "LE-GOdt" I would love to hear it. I understand that writing lay-go or leigh-go may make sense to some but not others so an actual video is best...

I pronounce it LEG-OH. That's how it is in the adverts.

Most annoying thing--my parents say LEE-go. We're Filipino; we have Spanish pronunciation. They should be saying LEH-go or LAY-go. Why do they say LEE-go! Whyyyyy! *has stroke*

I say LEH-go. (I also, proudly, say LEGOs. It's improper to use the word as a noun, but I say LEGOs anyway. But I do spell it in all caps.)

LEH-go for me, as well.

We have TRU commercials here (American) where the lady announcer says something like "with the most LAY-go's in stock" and it drives me bonkers every time I hear it, both the pronunciation and pluralization. EmbarassedRazz It just sounds... Wrong. To me, anyway.

The old LEGO ads said "Leh-go", but the more recent ones say "Lay-go". Weird.

I personally have always pronounced it "Leh-go".

Leh-go. I guess it's just a personal interpretation, as I sound about as plain old American as you can get, and my friend, who 's voice you could also describe as standard American, uses the "Lay-go" style. I guess it all depends on however you randomly pronounce the word upon first hearing it.

I'd like to just point out there is still likely to be a huge difference in pronounciation with the same spelling of sounds, just because of where we all come from.

Personally, I say Leh-go, but that's just me.

Here's another question: when you brainstorm a new plan for a MOC, is it an Eye-dee-ah or and eye-dee-er? It seems most east-coasters (at least the folks working at OCC choppers) seem to have forgotten that there is no 'r' in "idea." Wink

Eye-dear

It's kind of a combination of both of the examples I guess...

Pretty much same thing for me. Except for the fact that I prefer leh-go. However, I will use both.

I pronounce it LEE-go, too, sometimes even LEE-ko. Very Happy

And I, too, use the "incorrect" form LEGOs, although with the Finnish plural suffix, which makes it LEE-got. The singular plural words (or however they're called) like LEGO (and cattle and clergy, for example) just don't work at all in Finnish. But that goes slightly off the subject..

EDIT: However, just wondering.. Would the proper pronunciation for "LEGO" be the one used most widely, the one used in LEGO headquarters or the one originally used in Denmark?

What he said. 'Ay' as opposed to 'Eh'. Though this is interesting to see how others pronounce Lego, I'm still wondering how to pronounce MOC... Em Oh See or Mock...

Funny, I was thinking about this very thing today!

Just about everyone I've ver met or dealt with that works for the company from Denmark say "Leh-go." However, I've always said "Lay-go" and just about everyone I've dealt with that works for the company in America also say "Lay-go." I can't recall what the English people I've met from the company say.

I think it has a lot to do with your native language!

I also find it sort of funny when I've heard people from Billund use the term "wigs," while most people here (in North America) say "hair." (i.e. Do you like the new WIGS that the Clone Wars figures have?")

Wow. It appears we are running out of thread topic ideas in a BIG way... Wink

I just pronounce it Leg-Oh.

I think it's funny how in the modern commercials it's pronounce that way, but the late 90's commercials that had the "Lego, Leggie-O" song pronounced it "Lay-Go"... Laughing
