All right, boys and girls, it's time for the big enchilada. It's Election Day 2008.

Now, these threads always turn out badly. This one won't, though, because anyone who starts a fight will get punched in the throat.

Vote in the poll above, and if you have something meaningful to say, say it here. Please try not to specify who you voted for beyond the poll (we're trying to avoid fights, remember) but please do mention if you voted today.

Mods, can I get a sticky, please?

It doesn't matter who you vote for. Please, just go vote. While statistically your vote counts for very little, symbolically its the most powerful tool you and I have to express our wishes to the politicians in our city, state and federal governments.

I voted today. Wink

I didn't vote today.

I voted last Tuesday, instead.

And I know who you just voted for in the poll above, 'cause I saw it just before and after your post. Very Happy

But, since I support the secret ballot (which some pollsters think is a third party (true story)), I'm not going to say what my vote was, regardless of who knows.

Just got back from voting. Everyone here at the office woke up at ungodly hours like 5 or 6 am, so I thought I'd buck the trend and go at 9:47 on the dot. Wink No line out front, no line to check in, and I waited about five minutes to get a booth.

Northern Virginia has an absurd number of people crammed into a little area so it was nice to not wait over an hour for once I'm just hoping the ease I got in is the result of lots of people voting prior to today, voting early this morning, or planning to after work instead of just not voting at all.

Last comment here and then I'll stop spamming:

I would be interested in hearing what the non-Americans think in a separate poll as well. Do you want McCain? Obama? Or do you just not care about American politics? How big of a deal is this election beyond America's borders? Huge, or are you just tired of hearing about America, America, America, blah, blah, blah, applesauce?

Stood in line for three hours to vote on Friday, which I'm pretty sure negates the reason for early voting. Stupid university polling place.

PROTIP: If you have four poll workers, and one of them is about three hundred years old, don't put the old one in charge of checking names on ballots against ID's and explaining the ballot to each voter. It tends to hold things up a bit.

I voted this morning at about 7:30 AM. No line! Though I hear it really started to build up by 8 AM.

Seems like as good a place as any to throw this in:

And the corresponding message - I don't care which one you like better, if you have an opinion make it count.

Also, don't forget your other local measures. We've got some important things on the California Ballot that my vote means more for than the next president.

My view on the election is particularly skewed and quite a bit crap. My opinion is based on all the wrong reasons.
-Of the policies I know of (it's not a lot) I'd go for Obama
-McCain has done the political equivalent of trying to bury Obama in a rather large and smelly pile o' poop. So much of what I've seen on TV of the debates just has McCain attacking him over all sorts of stupid things, he's been making stuff up, and although it's not from McCain, the fact that people have been calling Obama a terrorist, among other things, is ridiculous, and I think it's amazing that Obama hasn't done the same thing
-And the last part, I know this shouldn't come into it, even though how could it not. But Obama is black (African American, whatever). Since the beginning, no matter what, there was either going to be a woman, or a black man running for President, and I think it'll do the world of good if he gets into office. I'm really not very articulate, so if I try to say anything sensible I don't think it'll come out right. But I just feel that the impact that it will have on, not only America, but everywhere will really be a positive thing.

There's probably other stuff, like Palin, her as a VP, or the President if McCain bought it...**shudders**...

I'm not all that political though, had ya noticed.

I like how Dan says it all, And Mike too

He's not a terrorist, but he has had connections to known-terrorists.

Joedward wrote:

He's only 6.25% black. Not enough to be officially African-American. He's Arab-American. (43.75% Arab) Hence his Arab name.

My thoughts on that is it's considered racist to have a reason to vote for someone because of their skin-color....but I guess that's just me.

Not gonna bother. I've all but suppressed my "MUST PROVE WRONG" instinct after an XKCD comic hit too close to home... I suggest everyone tries the same and let the thread get back to it's simple purpose.

Obama was eight years old at the time. That's not a "connection." Bill Ayers (I assume that's who you're referring to) has long since changed his ways. Therefore, claiming Obama has "connections to known terrorists" is patently false. Sticking with your original train of thought logically requires you to hold McCain to the same standard, and challenge his connections to convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy (who has taught his radio listeners how to kill police officers).

Chief, Don...

I respect you both, and I respect FBTB quite a bit. I understand where you're coming from here, and I'm sorry for this post ahead of time. I will accept punishment if necessary...

ThinkingImpaired wrote:

Sir. What you posted are not "facts," they are fiction. To wit:

Quote:
He's not a terrorist, but he has had connections to known-terrorists.

"Terrorists" implies that there are more than one. There is only one, and that is Bill Ayers. Obama's connection to Ayers is extremely limited, and there is zero evidence they share ideological similarities. Click here for more information.

Quote:
He's only 6.25% black.

This is simply laughable. Obama's father was full-blooded Kenyan, and served the Kenyan government as an economist. Obama would be considered 50% Black, were such a thing important. It's not, but you brought it up.

Quote:
Not enough to be officially African-American.

Really? What is the "official" percentage?

Quote:
He's Arab-American.

No, he's American.

Quote:
(43.75% Arab)

Proof does not exist of this claim, and in fact this claim can only be found on the most disreputable types of far-right blogs. It is a fear tactic and it has no place here on a family-friendly forum like this.

Quote:
Hence his Arab name.

Barack Obama's name is not "Arab," it is Islamic. The religion of Islam is not an Arab religion, and is practiced around the globe by people of dozens of national origins. This is another fear-mongering slur that has no place here.

Quote:
My thoughts on that is it's considered racist to have a reason to vote for someone because of their skin-color....but I guess that's just me.

Nope, it's everyone. But nobody is saying that they're voting for Obama because of his skin color.
