100% Sort!

Just recently, I accomplished what I thought I never would: all of my LEGO parts not currently boxed, set aside for current building projects, or on display are now sorted in their rightful, stratified bins/drawers. Now maybe I'll actually build something. Any other 100 percenters out there? If you could get a medal for this task, it would look something like this:

I use to have all mine sorted out by color and little parts (or parts I use a lot), but then I started building again, and it's not like that anymore.....need to go back through and re-sort all my parts, and find all my little pieces that I use all the time. I know I have a few hundred technic half pins in my collection, but they seem to have all disappeared into the clutter.

My system breaks parts into categories...sort of a hybrid of Peeron and Bricklink sorting methods. I'm not exactly sure how big my collection is, as I've never cataloged all of my various Bricklink orders. It's certainly not the biggest collection out there, but it's pretty ridiculous by my wife's standards. Wink

When I sort again, I will probably do it differently, and beak down my sort even farther for the colors I use the most. But none of this will probably happen for a couple years because all my LEGO is going into storage next summer in anticipation of graduating and moving out of my parents house.

Before last winter's big clearance haul, I had nearly hit 100%. Oh, and the baby showed up right after we got all that.

My collection has been a disaster ever since...
Sigh. It's all his fault Razz

Ugh! I keep my bricks in a closet (except for the stuff I have "out on display"). It stresses me out that I haven't catalogued and sorted me bricks. I think I've sorted about 3-4%.

I started a thread a while ago, and people gave me great tips (I still reference the thread now and then), but it's waaaaay more work than I thought it'd be.

LEGO's not my only hobby, so it's hard to find the crazy amounts of time to sort it all.

But, dear Draykov, I applaud your efforts, sir.

Start buildin'!

It's what it looks like when I'm in the squatty LEGO sorting position. Smile

When my daughter helps, pieces come out of the bins and form purple and pink spaceships/party huts as if by magic while my back is turned.

This is as close as 100% as I'm gonna be, so I'm kind of fudging it. I do have a tub full of train parts and half built cars for the Christmas set-up that I didn't feel like sorting because I'll need 'em pretty soon anyway...not to mention the tons of stuff I haven't gotten around to opening. Any more sorting will require getting bigger/more drawers. The next sale at Staples is months off, so I'm done for the foreseeable future.

Little by little over the course of several years...that's how I managed.

So far I'm only 60%. I have to get my brother to take his desk to his house so I can build a work desk and find some nice drawers for my laygoes. Razz

I'm prepetually at about 75% sorted or so. There's a large parts bin that sort of appeared as I moved and tossed things into it... mind you, it's a 20 gallon parts bin, but still. I've got a decent system, but my no means perfect, and have been slowly working towards sorting by building genre more than anything else (space parts in one place, castle in another, general bricks in yet a third).

Have to snap some pictures of the current monster when I get home from work this afternoon...

Damn, I envy anyone over 25% sorted. Razz My stuff's about 1.5% sorted; as in, it's not all just lying on the floor. The stuff in drawers is pretty random, though, save for 'minifigs' (which is about 2/5ths minifigs) and 'technic/Bionicle'. Sorry about the pics, but you wouldn't want to see my room in any more detail, trust me. Wink

Well at the moment the majority of my collection is sorted by colour. There a a few small boxes of assorted, and I keep minifigs separate. Some of my more recent sets (and some older) have been built and our displayed.

Oh, and I have a small collection of basic bricks organised by colour and piece. This is my "sculpting" lego, since it doesn't have any of the usuall marks, dent or the, er occasion toothmark... Rolling Eyes Embarassed

I was once about 80% sorted by color. Then I tried building and discovered sorting by color was a really stupid idea. I've since been contemplating sorting the real way but I've never gotten around to it.

Wow congrats on the 100%! That's quite an achievement. Your sorting system kinda looks like mine so I can relate.

This does imply that you stop buying stuff though. Razz

Mine has been sorted by color for years....it's not a very efficient way to find parts to build but I haven't built anything in ages anyway.

Pretty much all of the parts I have that are not together in a model are sorted by color.

Congrats on the 100%, Draykov. My entire family used to get drafted once a year to participate in the annual sorting event. Laughing

I sort mine by shape/function,( wings, windscreens, etc...). Right now I'm probably 80% sorted. I used to have specific colors sorted (i.e. gray, tan, brown), but that was when I only had two stacks of boxes. Now the number of boxes is up to four, and all assortment by color is gone now.

An achievement worth remembering,

The only things I sort by color are my bulk bricks. Everything else is sorted by size/type.

Tires/wheels in one box...
Large pieces in another...
Medium in another...
Red Bulk,
Yellow Bulk,
White Bulk,
Blue Bulk,
Assorted Bulk,
Minifigures/accessories,
A small chest of spin open drawers with many different kinds of small pieces...
Etcetera, etcetera, the list goes on...

But I am about 80% sorted.

Congratulations!

I figure I'm around 85% by part, although I have a suspicion that I still have redundant storage somewhere (the same pieces stored in multiple places) from the last big re-sort I did.

Thta reminds me of the time we moved house. at the time, my lego was sorted randomly into 3 larg boxes, and 5 smaller boxes. Then, when we moved, the entire lego collection was tipped into a fairly empty room and sorted by the entire family (even the cats helped out, kinda...). Unfortunatley, for time constraints, it was by colour.

Next time I get the oppotunity, I am reorganising the whole collection to a more effective system.

Apart from my built sets, I'd say I am at about 80% completion. I have most of my parts all sorted in to colors, and I have a lot of smashed-up sets, and abandoned projects sitting in bins.

The color-coding really comes in handy IMO. I can make a MOC just using one bin, rather than looking all over for the right colors.

Interesting. This is a problem that I don't have, since I'm keeping the vast majority of my sets in their original boxes.

But yes, I have six 15-liter plastic bins with spare parts.. all sorted Smile

If you've got kids, it's nearly impossible to be 100% sorted. I always thought I was close but when it took me a month to find the last dozen pieces of the NASA Space Shuttle to sell, I realized I wasn't that close. (In my defense, they were being used in models the boys made which is why I didn't know where to look.) Rolling Eyes
