You may have noticed a recent influx of horrible spam registering on the forum member list lately. It's been out of control, but we're doing our best to stem the tide.

In my best effort to stop the influx of crap, I've temporarily disabled registrations for the forum, and we will spend the next few days cleaning out the trash in the memberlist. Registrations will reopen when we feel we have gotten things under control again.

Why close off registrations completely? Why not just ban the bad accounts?

-Banning by IP doesn't work when the spam accounts don't post. If they don't post, we can't see the IP (at least in PHPBB2. I don't yet know what the case is for 3, but if it's improved, we might reschedule our upgrade to sooner rather than later.) And they don't care about posting, because they just need the trash site URLs in their profiles seen by the Googlebots of the internet that fly around the tubes looking for data to help searches. The trash links get noticed by the bots, and their sites jump up higher in searches. It's malicious, and there's not a lot of ways to combat it. But we're doing our best.

And this should go without saying, but DO NOT click any links in these garbage accounts.

You have my full support, good idea to disable registration for a while.
If you need any help with removing the spam members, let me know.

Are there any ways to prevent such registrations in the future?

There's a function for disallowing usernames. Using wildcards like *poop* or *xxx* will supposedly block out names like Doggypoopface or Hotxxxvid from being allowed to register. Realistically though, there's no surefire way of blocking all potentially offensive names.

That's just the ones with bad names. The big problem is usernames with gibberish letters and numbers and gibberish email addresses. These "users" have inappropriate or dangerous links in their profiles, for the purpose of climbing up the Google search ranks, as I mentioned above.

I hate technology sometimes.

Just asking completely out of curiosity, but why hasn't the upgrade happened yet? I'm ready to see some change I can believe in! (side note: *puke*)

Not that I'm sure about whether the newest version will make IP banning easier. I'm just curious.

Just wait two or three weeks, you'll see Razz

Personally, I blame Austin. He left, we were upset, we moved on, he thought that was bad, time to jump in and ruin there fun.

But that's just a possibility.

I posted in enchantedknight56s thread. I wonder if it's possible to put some kind of parental control/antispam on the websites members post in the "website" section of their profile.

I can feel your pain on this one.

I started a clothing line about 7 or 6 years ago and I started a website as an avenue to sell my goods. The first 6 months I was doing reasonably well, and then I got hit with spamming. At the time I had dial-up (broad band was something like $80.00 at the time) and so things like e-mail and web page uploads took a long time to come up on my computer. Suddenly I was receiving about 400 to 600 e-mails a day for plane tickets, “enlargements” and porn. It took roughly 3 to 4 hours every day for all of the e-mails to load. It took about the same amount of time to go through all the e-mails to figure out which ones were sales and which ones were crap. One day I received 800 e-mails. That was my breaking point. I took down the site, stop doing business and went back to my old job. I went about 9 months without ever getting online. I was that bitter about the situation.

Oddly enough, when I was told about FBTB.net a few years back, that was the beginnings for me coming back to the web. I lurked here for years before I finally joined as a member and started posting last year. Even though the earliest members show up around 2005, I think I was lurking here starting around 2003, when you guys had a different PHP.

My problem was I knew nothing about computers, and everything I did to set up my site I learned from books. Being such a novice was my down fall. I get a little pissed off seeing this type of thing happening to this site (which I love to visit, and find out the latest news). I hope you can fix these problems, and things work out better for you guys. I for one appreciate the efforts of the staff here to keep this site going. Good Luck.

Ouch. Wish I could make a custom version of forum that doesn't show user profile till first post.

I think stopping registrations is a good short term move, but something definitely have to be done.

So it appears you caught my diabolical master plan. Well, now that that's out in the open, I'd better warn you that I put saran wrap under your toilet seat and left fake dog poop near your favorite loafers.

Haha, that's what you get for talking behind someone's back Ed. Especially someone who had nothing at all to do with the problems the forum's facing today.

So... How is the staff feeling regarding things being under control? It's been 2 months since the last post here, and the first post said the cleanup would take a few days.
