I read all 8 pages of this thread. Then I watched my DVD again. Third time now. And I used subtitles. Because at some points the sound is really silent and hard to understand.
And now I really love this movie!
It's fantastic. The Joker is amazing. And all the others are great too.
But sometimes it is very fast cut, I think this is what confused me so much at first viewing.

One question though: I have the UK DVD which has a second DVD with some extras included. What is the difference between the IMAX scenes and the movie? I watched the prologue and Hongkong and both look pretty much the same like in the movie.

And when is this famous pencil scene you are all talking about?

The scene when the Joker kills a goon by slamming them into a pencil. That's the pencil scene.

I think you can only notice the IMAX difference in HD.

You can only view IMAX at an IMAX. TV has nothibg to do with TV or DVD type.

It's is tall, rather than wide. The extras show the difference between the actually celluloid film, and the picture.

He mentioned it during the film, I believe when he first met Bruce in the prison.

The Pencil Scene
The writer of "The Dark Knight" wrote:
Gambol: [to The Joker] Give me one reason why I shouldn't have my boy here pull your head off.

The Joker: How about a magic trick?
[pulls out a pencil and sticks it upright into the table.]

The Joker: I'm gonna make this pencil disappear.
[Gambol's thug walks over to kill The Joker, who slams his face into the pencil and kills him.]

The Joker: Ta-daa! It's.....it's gone!

The Joker really doesn't have a care in the world for his victims. Laughing

Thank you Smile
I now found the scene. It's too funny. *grin* Remembers me a bit at the pen killing scene in 'Casino'.

Its amazing, you know? When fans first heard that Heath Leger would play the role of the Joker, there was much discontent. Millions thought that this was a huge mistake and that someone who was more comical, like Jack Nicholson, should be the Joker.

Ledger obviously heard us. He worked hard on developing the character for the film, he even did his own make up. And in the end, he got everything right. He had the right look, the right talk, and most importantly, the right laugh.

And when everyone saw the film, we were literally blown away by his performance as one of the most iconic villians of all time.

I'm just home from my vacation to the US and Dad got me a Blu-Ray TDK disk. Unfortunately, the extra features are very sparse at best: there's absolutely nothing about Heath Ledger or the Joker as I suppose they were wary of putting anything out after his death. I was really looking forward to a Heath tribute on the disk. Also, I spotted a limited edition at Wal-Mart that was packaged with a Two-Face coin replica and a comic book with the first appearances of both the Joker and Two-Face. Unfortunately that was after we bought the Blu-Ray, so Dad said no. Also, I highly recommend buying the screenplay and production artwork hardcover book, better than any of the features you will find in the DVD. Also, it explicitly states that Two-Face died of a broken neck. Oh, and I can't help but brag that I saw the actual Batman and Joker outfits along with authentic props and one of the Tumblers used in the filming of TDK when I went on the Warner Bros VIP Studio Tour.

ah, so you can see the outfits there. Yesterday I stumbled over a flickr picture of the Joker suit, but the owner didn't have included a description.

How could you not realize Ra's al Ghul? Liam Neeson mentioned he worked for him. What I didn't realize was that Neeson was in fact Ra's all along. I always assumed he was the sensei looking character that was always introduced as Ra's al Ghul. And I just found this out a few weeks ago.

Don't feel bad about not noticing that Leeson was Ra's. I saw the movie when it first came out and several times afterwards (usually on FX since they seem to run it all the time). It wasn't until about 9 months ago that I realised that. The movie was on in the background while I was doing something, but I could clearly hear it. It got to the part where Leeson shows up at Bruce's house and for some reason when I heard the conversation that time it all clicked. My first thought was, "how on Earth have I missed that all this time" because I usually notice details like that or little background things that others seem to need giant neon letters to point out. I knew he was using Ra's name, but I figured that Watanabe's character was supposed to be Ra's and the idea that he wasn't somehow never occured to me until that moment. Either these two Batman movies have some ability to blindside me (unlike Batman and Robin which just blinds me) or Nolan is a lot better than I thought he was. I really thought they killed Gordon and never even considered him being the driver. I guess that show how much Nolan has me sold that I was convinced he killed off a character central to the mythos.

I saw The Dark Knight twice in theaters and I've now watched it again on DVD. While I liked Batman Begins, this is still an incredible improvement. One thing I'm glad they changed for this film was the fight scenes. In BB, I noticed during the fight scenes that the camera was shaking too much and I could hardly see what was happening, they have clearly fixed this in TDK.

The only difference on the DVD is that the original IMAX scenes are in a different aspect ratio than the ones in the movie i.e. there is more footage visible on the top and bottom of the screen. On a wide television, these scenes would completely fill the screen.

About the extras on the DVD, you just know that there will be a more elaborate edition released down the line. I think I'm going to buy the 1-disc since the features on the "special" edition are very sparse.

TB, what you said sounds wrong, on DVD you can't tell which scenes are IMAX. The DVD format runs the entire movie in the same aspect ratio.

Yes, on the movie disc of the 2-disc Special Edition. But on the 2nd disc of special features, the IMAX scenes are presented in their original aspect ratio.

I've just been perusing around and reading some older threads. And a question, one probably not new, has come up once again in my mind.

I love the movie. Just got it a few days ago. And now I wonder, who will be in the next one. So what do you think?

I think it would be great to see the Mad Hatter or Harley Quinn. I've heard, but have yet to see it confirmed that Johhny Depp will play the Riddler in the next one. Anyone else heard that? (I havent really done an extensive search on it I must say)

And apologies if this has already been discussed.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has been confirmed for a third movie. There isn't even definitely going to be a third one. The only hint is that Christian Bale is under contract for a third one, or something to that extent. Nolan has stated he will only go forward with the series if he feels they can top the previous movie.

[/movie speculation]

I just got my surround sound hooked up again, and Dark Knight is amazing to see with it on.

GIR is completely right. Nobody really listened when I said that a third movie isn't confirmed. However, because of the hype and the box office takings of The Dark Knight, there is likely to be a third movie. Still, Heath Ledger's untimely passing threw a spanner in the works as the Joker was obviously meant to appear again. As for movie speculation, crazy rumours have been flying about citing everyone from Rachel Weisz to Cher as Catwoman and Eddie Murphy (!) to Johnny Depp as the Riddler. Personally, I wouldn't mind Johnny Depp. In my mind, the Riddler is meant to be an introverted narcissist who enjoys the irony of being just that. Someone suggest Edward Norton; which would be great if only he wasn't already the Hulk. As for Catwoman, I'd love them to cast a sultry, exotic relative-unknown. Personally I think Olga Kurylenko would be terrific, and Stana Katic (look her up-she's the girl at the very end of Quantum of Solace) could do it quite nicely too. And of course both Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan have vehemently said that they don't want a Robin in their movies, but I think John Hutcherson would be a great choice. He's young enough, angsty and funny enough, and has reasonably good acting chops for his age. Check him out in Bridge to Terabithia, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D and Zathura.

Meh, I hope they dont cast Robin. Personally, I feel that it makes the movies sort of, well, cheesy. I guess I sort of assumed that they would make a third one, but you're right, it hasnt been confirmed.

I still say Mad Hatter or Harley Quinn.

Unfortunately I don't think either or those characters are wellknown. A more obvious choice would be The Riddler, Catwoman or The Penguin. I think we can rule out Flyman and Sandman - both were rather lame (for those not in the know, they appeared in one comic strip in the UK before being quickly killed of due to awfullness).

Raj al Guhl - wellknown? Maybe to Bat-fans, but not to people like me (i.e people who like the films).

I think Nolan could easily do unknown villains (especially since he's said he's not doing any more villains that have already been done).

Exactly my thoughts, Fetty. So long as he keeps it relatively believable and takes it seriously, he can grab any obscure character he wants.

Were there not pictures of Depp as the Riddler and two other somebodies as Catwoman and Harley Quinn? Or were those disproved? I seem to remember seeing the Riddler in a lime green suit with a fedora-like hat, Catwoman with a suit similar to her old suit from the original Animated Series only with armor advancements similar to what was done to Bale's suit in the movie, and Harley looking rather roughed up, but holding a pistol.

P.S. I finally saw the Dark Knight... Brilliant. I don't know why people were saying the Joker was more of a background villain... He never was on the front lines much! His part in the movie was what it should have been.

Nolan did a great job with Two-Face; the way his evil was growing as the Joker's was dying out kept the flames of action flowing even during Two-Face's relatively short scenes.

Everything he said is statement of fact. It's not speculation.

Actually, if there were pictures, they were fake.

Yeah, I remember reading about that in a thread over at TGWTG.com, those were made by a extremely talented photo editor, and did feature Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Riddler.

I'll see if I can find those pictures, as well as the guy's site.

EDIT: Here's where you can find the edited pictures.

Okay, I finally saw this movie (I was rather late to the party...) and it was fantastic. I just can't get over how amazing Heath Ledger was as The Joker. I've never really liked the joker, but now he's my favorite comic villian.
