Now this is a challenge. I like it, since it will actually take some thought and creativity to do. Never done steampunk before, so this is a great excuse to try it out.

Now when you say "core vehicles," I assume you mean like X-wings, pod racers, and landspeeders (as mentioned), as opposed to random obscure ships that were barely seen or not even in the movies. I need to think about this.

Exactly gir... no sense using some obscure ship people can't relate your model to.

Don/dW: How about a rule saying that you can only steampunkify a ship already done by Lego? That gets rid of the problem of obscurity.

Or is that too limiting?

Nah, that's slightly too limiting IMO. 'Course, LEGO has pretty much covered all the icons, twice in most cases, but I'm sure there are a couple leftover I can't think of.

Can we use a Lego created ship and modify it into steampunk? Or does it have to build all by yourself from the scratch?

Andi - we're looking for all new ships that combine the Star Wars look and steampunk style, so modifying existing sets probably wouldn't turn out very well... but it is a place to start from, so give it a shot if you like. I think you'd do better with a scratch built one though.

arc - sorry, but stick to official elements please.

Nice idea! I'll test my creative capabilities to the limit with this one. And then enter this contest ... with a MOC!! :0

I know we're not supposed to post our picture here but what if it gets uploaded to Brickshelf?

You can make your MOC thread and upload your pictures to brickshilf/slick/wherever at any time, just don't submit any entires to this thread until the given dates. This is to make sure all the entries are easier to browse for the judging portion.

Also, in your MOC thread, please don't waste the title pointing out it's a contest entry. Looking back through the Star Wars MOC subforum it gets redundant. I did it too for the ugly contest, so don't feel too bad anyone...

Well Don, I've never ever ever built any steampunk ever before. But I guess that is the whole point of contests, ain't it. To stimulate creative building. I guess this will be my first foray into steampunk. I've sketched out my idea already. The most iconic bounty hunting craft, mixed with some iconic steampunkisms. If I can pull it off with Lego, it just might look pretty cool.

I might give a try at it. I've never done any Steam-Punk before.

Is clipping podracer tubes considered modding? They were meant to be cut...

You know what's sad? I'm almost finished with mine already. Laughing What can I say, as soon as I read the topic title I had an idea. Just ordered some parts to complete it. I might make a couple entries and pick one.

This might seem like a silly question, but how long does ordering from bricklink usually take? I may need some parts for this contest and I'm just wondering how much time to budget.

Geez, I just found out about this and I've already created something! Laughing Not to bad looking IMO for my first steam-punk MOC. Pictures will be up soon.

the Bricklink term for that stuff is "Hose, Rigid 3mm D." and it comes in various lengths, and different sets do indeed require you to cut them to size. To me, that doesn't make it a modified part because it's an established practice in official sets. So unless dW wants to veto this, I say it's kosher to trim the tubes.

It's fine by me. I remember having to adjust my podracer sets like that, since the tubes kept pulling off the clips.

Can the model be smaller than the original? For example, an AT-AT being half its size or three fourths its size.

One thing to keep in mind is the whole "minifig/system scale" size is relative... take a look at the official sets to see what I mean. So try not to let that aspect limit you too much, just don't be absurd making a on manned ATAT or anything.
More directly though, no. The size doesn't have to match up to the system sets, just keep it reasonable. It's the look of the vehicle that's more important than the size. If it's undersized or oversized but still looks great, it'll probably be a contender.

How bizzare is this project? We're doing Star Wars vehicles out of Legos, but redesigned to resemble if they were steam powered. Laughing

Question: Can a steampunk vehicle have flames shooting out of exhaust?

heh, I suppose that's a pretty accurate statement. I say if it looks good, go for it - but if you're just going to stick flames in a tire to justify calling it an engine, don't bother... Wink

This is LEGO man, you don't need to stick to prefabbed parts just because they're there... here's one very nice solution to your problem.

I know, I know. Sorry that I don't have as creative imagination as yours. Wink

By the way, I seem to be unable to see that picture you linked to, it says I should sign in to see it. I don't, however, have a Flickr account and since registering for only one picture is somewhat pointless, could you - or anybody else for that matter - toss me another link?
