|
|
The early 2008 SW sets are now widely available in Switzerland. Naturally I picked up the ones I wanted (7668, 7670 and 7671). Since we already have reviews of the other ones, I'll just do a quick one for the 7671 AT-AP.
I quite like this set. It has a clever House-of-plates construction with hardly any gaps. Generally speaking I'm quite impressed with the construction considering it's "only" a System set (instead of a UCS one or even a MOC). The minifigs aren't that exciting to me: You just get 2 red Clones. Instead of the short gun shown on the package front you actually get two long rifles.
The parts are adequate for the purpose. There aren't many new parts except the 1x1 brick with clip and the new style of pin joiner as seen on the main gun. I guess that the production costs for these new Pin Joiners are lower, but that's still no reason for me to like this change...
The set does a good job of depicting an AT-AP. The walker is stable even with 2 legs. The third leg folds up nicely and can be attached using 2 studs. All in all I really like how this set turned out.
On the negative side, I just have to mention that I paid 69.14 US$ for it (using today's exchange rate). I'm afraid that even though it is a good set, this price tag will scare of a lot of potential buyers.

Hmm.......it seems I am being repeated by others on here. I shall overlook this and assume you're both drunk. _________________ FBTB: The Final Chapter

The size of the actual set is impressive. I thought it was smaller.
Nice review. now I must ask, do the two legs move at all, or are they fixed? _________________

Ooooohhh!!!! I like those dark clear pieces on the sides and the trap doors on it look promising. A couple of these would look great walking towards the MTT in a battle scene! _________________

GIR3691: The two main legs have one point of articulation. The hip joint is poseable using these pieces, but everything else is fixed in place. _________________ Reto

Great review; I'm really psyched for getting two or three of these. I might try some modification to make the legs more poseable; that way, they'd animate better in a stop-motion. _________________ A cat, when pushed off a table, always lands on its feet.

Well my TRU had some 2008's so yes I bought them all. The AT- AP:
Pro's: Loved the legs they all work nicely.
Con's: Only 2 minifigs, the cover shows one of the clones with the smaller of the two new guns and set doesn't actually come with the smaller guns. The under side and back of the walker have some exposed or open parts where you can see inside. I don't mind cracks but I hate holes. In the front right when you're facing it you can almost fit a minifig between the nose and the floor plating. This is a set that I'm going to alter. On the driver side the control plane blocks this hole but they left it empty. I can post pitures later.
All in all I was every happy still to have something new! _________________

Lucky. I went to the nearest one to me (which is 40 miles away) only to discover that Christmas shoppers had taken them all. |

This was my one main complaint with the design as well. A glaring omission, as it could have been remedied using a mere three parts.
Other than that, I agree with the general consensus in this thread ... my personal favorite of the early-2008 line . _________________ RLTW!

Well, what's worse? Not having LSW or advertising it two months ahead of time (which is actually two months after the rest of the world gets them) and causing die hard fans to be driven near to "I seem to be having tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle"-fest waiting and going to their local TRU (which in the exact OPPOSITE part of town, btw) every day and getting their hopes horribly crushed?!?! And we can't order them because of the insane shipping and handling fees ($15 added to the SI, come on!) , backorders and shipment times!!!! You, my friend, don't KNOW unfairness until you have lived in Saskatchewan (Specifically Regina, since Saskatoon gets things well before us)!!!!!!
Whew!!! Sorry about that rant, but I've been waiting a looooong time to let that out. _________________

What?! We're all entitled to at least one enraged rant in the forums, aren't we? Anyways, at least the sets can ship tomorrow (didn't buy any, it's just encouraging to know they'll ship right away). I'm definitely buying this to counter my MTT!!
