Update 9/5: Poll has closed, and the results all point to Legohaulic as the big weiner! Congrats man!
Update 8/28: Okay, here are your finalists as picked by Jon Palmer:
Legohaulic
Mark Stafford
porschecm2
fmoo
mikepsiaki
Update 8/15: flickr page is up. You can access it here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/no_onions/sets/72157594238639773/
Here's the mosaic:
Honorable Mentions:
Here is a list of the honorable mentions. It was really painful to disqualify some of these as a few of them were some of the best models.
Amethyst (image exceeded dimensions)
DevallusGuys (thumbnail too large)
FoxPrimus (no backstory)
Jayfo (image exceeded dimensions)
Jzaltheral (no backstory)
Malaclypse (posted after deadline)
MKD (no backstory)
obiwan stefan (no backstory)
Outrider (image exceeded dimensions)
roguebantha (no backstory)
Sibley (no backstory)
the Champ (thumbnail exceeded dimensions)
Just to clarify the "no backstory" reason: the backstory had to be posted as part of the entry, not linked to.
Update 8/15:
JudgingOkay, here's how the judging is going to work. It's a little different this month. Normally there would be two rounds of voting. Round one determines the top 5 vote getters, then there would be a final round of votes to pick the best from the top 5. This month's contest is going to go a little differently. As soon as I'm finished editing the flickr set, I'm going to have Jon Palmer select his favorite top 5. After he's done that, the select few will have one round of voting from the community to select the best R-wing model.
------------------------
It's no secret that I am a big fan of Jon Palmer's Alphabet Project. Unfortunately, it lies in a state of incompleteness with just 4 letters left. One of those letters is the letter R. So for this month's contest, build the R-wing Fighter.
Some guidelines, cause we all know how much I love guidelines and redefining them over and over again :
Uppercase R: your ship, in some view, must resemble the Roman character R in uppercase form.
Minifig Scale: your R-wing must be in minifig scale and be able seat at least 1 minifig pilot.
Official, unaltered parts: only official LEGO brand building blocks and elements in unaltered form should be used to build your ship. No cutting, no painting, no melting, no alterations of any kind. This also means no CAD renderings.
One entry per person: 'Nuff said.
Submission Format: You submit your entry by replying to this thread within the submission window. Your reply must include a photo of your R-wing no larger that 375x500 (or 500x375). If the photo does not immediately and obviously depict your ship as the letter "R", you may submit a second photo in thumbnail size (100x100) showing the ship as the letter R. Your images must be included in the reply; links to images will not count. You must also include a brief description of the origin of your R-wing. Optionally, you may include a link to your ship's brickshelf, flickr, maj, mocpages, or personal web site gallery.
Submissions Accepted July 30, 2006 through 11:59pm August 5, 2006. Entries submitted before or after will not be considered.
2 rounds of voting: Round 1 will narrow the field down to the top 5. Round 2 will determine the winner. Voting will occur soon after submission deadlines.
Prize: The winner will receive an original M-wing kit, as original as it gets anyway. I'll be assembling all new parts and creating a kit using the original packaging from one of the M-wing kits I bought years ago. Yes, I sitll have my packaging and the CD-ROM of instructions. The winner will be able to select which color M-wing they would like from a limited set of choices. Choices will be determined at a later date. Grey parts will be in old grey, not bley. M-wing pilot not included. To see which version of the M-wing you'll be receiving, scroll down for an image below. Also, the version of the kit that I received did not have a grey barrel unlike the images on his site, and thus, the kit being offered as the prize will also NOT have the grey barrel.
Let the questions commence. _________________ flickr

Woohooo! Sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks Ace!
EDIT: Whops, forgot my question! Here it is: Which version of the M-Wing shall we be recieving? It looks like there are two versions on John Palmer's site. Also, What are the different colors? That orange looks delicious! _________________

Ohh, seems like fun! Although, you fail to specify if we can have more than the 2 images in our Reply. Can we? _________________ Trade, Anyone?

I know, but the way you worded it kind of suggested you were saying we could have more. but thanks for clearing that up. _________________ Trade, Anyone?

Aren't you rushing it a bit, dude!!! Imagining the letter "R" as a fighter is a challenge by it self! You must be a super duper builder! _________________ Darkkazmo

There goes my idea for the Triple-R-Wing, a ship eventually chosen as the perfect fighter for space pirates who simply called it ...
wait for it ...
wait ...
wait ...
the Arrrrr (I can't believe I said that)

Even with only one 'R'. There is still alot do to build. Look at the X-Wing. I only looks like an X from the front and back. No X from the top.
But, why does it have to look like an 'R'. The B-Wing doesn't look like a B? _________________ Dimebag Darrell, Gone, but, not forgotten!

I'm in! I do have a question. Are we limited to the capital letter "R" or the small "r". I think the answer will be oblivious but just to clarified that point. I already have some idea in my head! _________________ Behind every great Squadron leader, there is always a number two to watch is six.

Sorry. I did not understand the meaning of "uppercase" R .
Thanks Sam89 for putting my train on the right track _________________ Behind every great Squadron leader, there is always a number two to watch is six.

Not really. It usually takes me a day or two to build something. I think I lucked out with the design. It wouldv'e been shorter If I hadn't built it backwards. _________________ I hate that freakin' mushroom! |

Let me get the unmodified piece thing straight:
Printed elements: Legal
Brassoed printed elements: Illegal
Stickered elements with stickers on: Legal
Stickered elements without stickers: Legal
If this is incorrect, correct me. Also, do stickers (assuming they are legal) have to be uncut and placed in the spot the instructions say? _________________ Do you see me... or me? |

they have to be unaltered, where you put them is your choice - to be honest they really aren't needed, a MOC should stand alone, on it's own without anything there to make it seem 'more real' - this is as of all LEGO madels imho _________________

Does the minifig pilot have to be a human/oid or can it be a droid that is human in form, i.e. a battle droid (or something like that)? |

that is correct.
assuming you would want to ruin your model with stickers, they have to be unaltered. _________________ flickr |

never thought i'd see a question about the type of pilot.
it has to be minifig scale, so if it's minifig scale, it's fine. you can have r2 pilot the r-wing (now THERE'S an idea for you) for all i care. as long as it's not the Technic R2 or some other scale. battle droids, geonosians, yoda, super battle droid, r2 units, ig-88, mousedroid, all legal. _________________ flickr |

So something like the "droid pilot" in the TIEd would be fair game? If so, sweet. |

Don't take it the wrong way, but the way you posted that comment gave the impression that you weren't serious, or the model that you've built isn't as good... I don't know the level of your building skills, or how large your brick collection is, but from my experience, even the most skillful builders around the whole LEGO community can't pull something nice in the same pace of time you've pulled!
It's always wise to take enough time to study you're creation and modify it before you finalize your decision! I mean, you have about a whole month to build something worthy enough, why just cut it to few hours? _________________ Darkkazmo

Hey Onions,
From friday of next week onwards I will not have access to a camera, camera to computer link up or even any LEGO as that is when my holiday officialy begins.
I was hoping you could let me post my entry before friday, I have thought up a design and think it works very well, this competition has really got me thinking about how I want to build and would love to see if it has a shot in the compo.
Many thanks if you can help me out,
Ed
P.S I have pmed you the same message _________________
