A small contest to get you through the month!

The goal of the Create-A-Droid contest will be to (ahem) create a droid using only Lego parts. It can be any type of Star Wars droid as long as it is in scale with a standard Lego minifig. The winner will recieve one of my very own Treadwell Droids. Luke and Vaporator shown for scale only.

Rules:

1. Only Lego pieces may be used.
2. Subtle alterations to pieces are allowed, such as the neck joint I used in my Treadwell. Painting or otherwise marking is also allowed, but don't go crazy with it.
3. No LDraw submissions.
4. Must be an existing Star Wars droid, either from the movies or from the Expanded Universe. You should be prepared to provide a reference if your droid is obscure.
5. Time limit: 3 weeks. End date is April 23rd. Winner will be notified by PM within a few days.
6. For general reference, I consider minifig scale to be roughly One Foot = One Stud.
7. Prize: One Treadwell Droid, an original design by me. Printed instructions are included. There is a possibility of a bonus for exceptional design.
8.* One entry per person.

Judging:
Judging will be done by me alone, but I will certainly listen to other critiques. Judging will be based on (in order of importance):
1. Accuracy
2. Scale
3. Presentation (not AS important as the first two, but _please_ try to take a good picture)

You may post your entries at any time. Changes will be allowed if you absolutely have to, but you must:
1. Edit your original post ONLY - do not make a second post for your revised entry.
2. DO NOT DELETE A SINGLE WORD OR PICTURE FROM YOUR ORIGINAL POST: Simply add on to your original post - I enjoy seeing a clear evolution.

This is intended to be a simple contest with a simple prize - but don't be decieved! That Treadwell droid of mine took a staggering amount of time to create and finalize considering it's small size (I estimate 12-16 hours, over time).
Take care with your design, but above all have fun!

- Matt

I know you said only from movies or EU, but would concepts count? I have a great idea for a concept from the Art of Episode 3 book...

I hope this isn't improper, but the official Star Wars site has pics of droids from the regular and expanded universe. Just click on the pic for a larger image.

Well, after 6 hours of on and off sneezing, I have my 11 foot SP-4 Droid. It's spring break, so I didn't have to study or finish any homework. I had a bit of free time. Ya, I don't excpect to get anything for accuacy, but hopefully you can enter more than one entry.

Well, here it is.
And the gallery.

EDIT: I noticed the pic looks kinda confusing. It's got a table in front of it and the saberdart in its "hand". Very Happy

I will certainly accept that! Just provide a scanned image of your source material, or if you can't at least give the page number (and location of image on page, if it isn't obvious). I don't have the book but I've seen it at both my local library and bookstore, which I go to frequently.

Yes, only one entry. By the time the contest deadline is up, you'll need to pick one for your entry.

Oi... it wasn't easy. I've been trying for nearly as long, actually. In fact I've still got a message to him he hasn't even read (I know 'cause it's in my Outbox, not Sentbox)- and it's over 3 weeks old now!

I have located a droid that I want to model after, and Im sure its in episode 1 because I have the Dk books/Lucas Books Episode 1 Visual Dictionary, but sadly it does not tell the name of the droid. Is it ok if i just scan a picture of the droid from the book? Thanks.

If this contest is for droids in minifig scale, should there be a lower-size limit to the driod ( For instance, there are droids in the Essential Guide to Droids that are smaller than a normal human hand). Also, what about the huge droids (like the construction droid and the GINORMOUS probot, the latter which would be roughly 500 studs in height)? Third question: Should you put a ban on human replicant droids, as they essentially would be minifigs and not have much creativity to them?

Thanks

As far as I can tell:

1. the rules say that it has to be to scale with a minifig

2. Why not build a bigger droid, so long as it's that big?

3. What would be the point in that Rolling Eyes Very Happy

Ok, round two of questions: Smile

Quote:
1) Can we just build really big droids (Hailfire, Construction droid, etc..)
Well, sure. But remember I'm judging on accuracy and scale, not piece count. And also remember that the prize is really small - this is intended to be a simple contest. Smile
Quote:
2) Should you put a ban on human replicant droids, as they essentially would be minifigs and not have much creativity to them?
Nope. Lack of creativity will not be banned. But it will certainly hamper your chances of winning. Smile
Quote:
3) Is it ok if i just scan a picture of the droid from the book?
Go right ahead - but also give me the page number. The scanned image will help everyone else see what a great job you did - but I also have the book and that'll make it easier for me to compare.
Quote:
4)Can we enter something that has previously been posted? (i.e, does it have to be a new model?)
I would prefer new models. Contests on this site are usually designed to spur creativity and mine is no exception. However, if you want to revamp an older model, be my guest.
Quote:
5) are you sure I can't have more than one entry?
Yes.
Quote:
6) If this contest is for droids in minifig scale, should there be a lower-size limit to the driod ( For instance, there are droids in the Essential Guide to Droids that are smaller than a normal human hand)
No limits, but if you enter a 1x1 round plate as your droid I will personally send you all the Megablocks I've found hiding in my collection. However, if you were to make such a droid life-sized I think I would consider it.
On another note, I've personally never cared for the 'Essential' guides. I've noticed a lot of innaccuracies, both in the drawings and write-ups. Plus, they never give actual images - which is why I love the DK series of books. This is just personal, though, and won't affect my judgement of your work.

Oh, and kudos to Wat Tambor for being brave enough to use Bionicle parts! Wink

I just went and drilled through my lego bin to find a droid I made some time ago, but then I read that it could only be in the movies or EU. But then again, there's a silver lining to every cloud, heres my Octapurra Droid.

Oh, and btw, I modelled this Octapurra around the ones in Clone Wars, hence the brown rock for a head. Wink
Oh, and excuse my straightforwardness, but when does this contest close?

I don't normally enter these contests, but I have been wanting to make this droid anyway so it gave me a good excuse. I really like the way she turned out. After I saw one of the above entries I was a bit discouraged, but I guess great minds think alike. I had to wait till my parts from bricklink got in today before I could finalize her, WA-7:
