|
|
Here are a few things most of us have to live with:
1) Display space is limited
2) LEGO constantly comes out with cool new UCS sets.
As a result, we often have to change what gets put out on display. With these sets, I get a lot of enjoyment out of building them. However, taking them apart is a bit of a nightmare for me since I sort all the pieces back into baggies in order to make the next building experience easier.
So my question is, how many times have you built your UCS sets?
Here are mine:
7181 TIE Interceptor
Built: 2
Dismantled: 2
7191 X-Wing Fighter
Built: 2-3
Dismantled: 2-3
7194 Yoda
Built: 1
Dismantled: 1, into my spare parts pile now
10019 Rebel Blockade Runner
Built: 0
Dismantled: 0
10030 Imperial Star Destroyer
Built: 1
Dismantled: 1
10134 Y-Wing Attack Starfighter
Built: 0
Dismantled: 0
10179 Millenium Falcon
Built: 1
Dismantled: 1 (in progress) |

I've built the X-wing, AT-ST, TIE Advance and Yoda (my mum's) once.
I've built the Naboo fighter a couple of times, and the snowspeeder was built enough times to know how to make it from memory. Like, 10 ish.
A may have missed one, not sure. _________________

The Tie Interceptor was a very repetitive build.
The Star Destroyer was a great build till I tried to put all pieces together - I never managed it without any crashing at any side.
all my 10 fingers hurted for 2 days after dismantling the Falcon _________________ ~Andi

I have a LEGO room with six shelving units and I still run out of space. I can't imagine how someone could display everything. _________________ _,.-:*?`?*:-.,_,.-:*?`?*:-.,_,.-:*?`?*:-.,_,.-:*?`?*:-.,_,.-:*?`?*:-.,_,.-:*?`?*:-.,_,.-:*?`?*:-.,_ |

A travesty, I know. In addition to display space and a steady stream of new UCS sets from LEGO, there is another factor at work here: time. Building a set that consists of 1000-5000 elements involves a significant temporal investment. _________________ Hail Brains!

I would consider my UCS stuff to be pretty much on permanent display and to date I've had the X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Interceptor, Vader's TIE, Naboo Fighter, Star Destroyer, Blockade Runner, Millennium Falcon, AT-ST and Yoda displayed since originally assembling them. Of course it helps to have more than 40 feet of shelf space to do so. _________________ My BrickLink store |

I have a UCS Y-Wing I got for my birthday when it was new - and I've yet to open the box. I also picked up the X-Wing from another member a while back and never got around to verifying it's complete... but I trust him. I simply don't have a place to put them yet, but know they're awesome.
In all honesty, reminding me of them just now pushed me an inch closer to buying a house. |

I don't have the heart to take anything apart. I buy one or two sets and then rearrange everything in my LEGO room. It is becoming increasingly difficult, but I manage to fit everything in.
My wife has been wondering how I can keep doing it. She actually made the most amazing offer ever last week. If I can clean out the garage and sell my '67 Mustang (which is going to break my heart) ; we will knock out the back wall of my LEGO room, expand it into the garage and wall-in that half of the space. I will more than double (almost triple really) the size of that room and will be able to keep collecting and still have everything out on display for years to come. _________________ <O> <O>

Out of the 5 UCS sets I have (inc the Death Star)
10174 AT-ST
Built: 0 (Still MISB)
Dismantled: 0
10179 Millenium Falcon
Built: 0 (Still MISB)
Dismantled: 0
10143 Death Star II
Built: 3/4ths (3/4ths made then my cat knocked it off the table...)
Dismantled: 1 (In several large chunks not dismantled into 5000 odd bits)
10188 Death Star
Built: 2/4ths (half made then went into hospital for a long time, when I got out my mum had moved everything and mixed all the sorted pieces up. Just have not had the drive to sort them out again.
Dismantled: 0
10186 General Grievous
Built 0 (Still MISB)
Dismantled: 0
As you can see I do not have much time to get around to doing them. I still have some new clone wars sets unmade (mostly the biggest ones)
When I do try and do them something goes wrong ><. |

we should have a thread or topic of people just showing off their pictures of their collections. i know there have been some in the past, but they get lost way in the back pages. |

Because we can.
I'm quite lucky concerning display space. Our garage has a second floor which has been converted into a LEGO/pool/video game hall. (Yes, I'm 35.) All the UCS sets are up, and I have built the majority of them only once. The exceptions are:
10030 ISD - built 4 times. This was my first UCS, it has been around a while.
7191 X-wing - built 2 times. I took it apart because i wanted to. This was before I had all the space.
10143 DSII - built 2 times. Fell over in the car when it had been on display in a toy shop window. Didn't feel like fixing it then, so I took it apart instead. _________________ I'm no zombie |

No. No amount of space is worth that. Unless it's a junker, which I'm guessing yours isn't. _________________ For some reason, I always have a bad feeling about things.

Sadly, I only have 2 UCS sets, the Star Destroyer and the AT-ST. I've built both once, but had to take the AT-ST down 'cause I was moving. I'll get around to building it again sometime. . .
The Star Destroyer I had to dismantle about 6 months after I'd finished it because I noticed the nose began to sag under the weight of the model. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it? |

I don't usually like to just sit and watch T.V. so I'll build my sets at that time. Building is very calming for me so I'll build all my sets (including all my smaller sets) until I run out. I display them for a while and then dismantle them. After a break of a few months or so, I start the process all over again. |

A year ago, I successfully dismantled my UCS falcon down to the major component level...not the piece level. I then stored it in the original box. A month ago, i decided to build it again...and I was surprised to see how intact it remained. It only took me 1 hour to reconstruct the entire thing from scratch |

yah, i'm definitely going to have to put some time in to complete these things. some have never been built bc i didn't have room for them outside the closet, plus i didn't have time to build them bc of our baby being born.
so now we have a new house with more room, and our "baby" is 18 months old, so i do have more time to build once in awhile.
oh, and...

My wife has been trying to get me to sell that car for a while now. It's not a junker it's in pretty good shape. I put in a nice CD Player in it, some sweet speakers, and hooked up an alarm system. The problem was that when the cost of gasoline went up I decided to let it sit, because to have it run well, the premium gas is the best for it. At over $5.00 a gallon and about 10 miles per gallon it was the thing that made it too much to drive, so I non-oped it to save on registration and insurance during these lean times of the economy. One of the previous owners used to drag race with it. So it really goes fast quickly. The only problem is it still has the drum brakes, so stopping is a whole different story. I really wanted to save this car for when I retire. It's one of few things I own that's older than I am.
Back on topic- The space might be worth it since the space I have now reflects that I've been adding shelves on the wall in spots to keep making room for new sets. The room looks kind of thrown together. _________________ <O> <O>
