Man, talk about an obscure rolling out the carpet. Has anyone else seen this yet

When i first saw the name I thought it would be a Lego pen.

For the amount of publicity it has gotten i expect that they didn't pump much money into it, nor do they expect to get much out of it, I might just buy a copy to say I have the most obscure lego set ever.

Although at $19.99 for only 69 pieces and a booklet, I'm skeptical of its worth, that better be a dang good booklet. Wink

here's the link Obscure Lego Set

I thought that was a huge 2,000 or so piece set until you said it has 69. $20 seems like way too steep a price for it.

These aren't really aimed at FOLs, but architects and designers and people obsessed with these buildings.

At least they look easily re-created. Just some standard bricks and a couple of tiles. You can easily make them yourself.

I do agree that the price is rather steep, but they are pretty cool.

These two towers are pretty cool, but the Hancock Tower would probably have better pieces than those two towers. Now that's a set I'd like to see!

I have both of these set sitting on my desk here at work -- or rather, the "I just got the pieces off Bricklink for much cheaper and I'm only missing the nametag tiles" sets. My wife and I did just go to Chicago a few months ago and had cocktails up on the 96th floor of the Hancock Building, so it's fun to have a micro-scale version, with the observation deck visible. And the Sears Tower is built like the real one: nine "tubes" in a 3x3 grid ascending to varying heights. Neat, but nowhere near worth the $20 price tag. Apparently, the Space Needle and the Empire State Building are in the works next.

These two buildings are part of a new line of Lego aimed mostly towards sales in gift-shops and the like. I heard (from a fairly reliable source) that the gift shop at the Sears Tower was going through around 500 a week.
A Chicago-themed gift shop at Woodfield mall (in the greater Chicago area) was also doing a brisk buisness - they were out of them when I stopped in. The interesting thing? The store is DIRECTLY ACROSS from the Lego store in that mall.

I would say that most people in this forum could take one look at the box and then go home and build it themselves - but that's ok, because you're not the target audiance.

It's swell that they're doing this, but the price point is terrible, and the recreation would be, as has been mentioned, pretty easy. I'm fairly certain I could knock both of those out from pieces I have at home right now.

I've been in the Hancock building, probably about 30 years ago. I don't remember it at all, but maybe we'll go in it next summer when we visit Chi-town again.

10 seconds of "work" on Google found me the instructions for both buildings.

Clicky the linky

EDIT

Looks like they're doing four buildings right now:

I think it'd be best to just get the piece list off Bricklink, and then download the instructions off Lego.

Simple enough, right?

EDIT: Correction. I tried to find the instructions off Customer Service. They aren't listed. Neutral
