It's ugly. A cheap cash in and a weak attempt to bridge together two very different halves of a movie series.

^^^ Agreed! (I guess the idea is you can't sell new toys if you don't "invent" new ships, right? Blecch! Mad )

And if it is indeed a representation of Republic design asthetic, then we have further evidence as to why the Republic fell so hard. The Rebels and Imperials junked or modified all the Republic's ships for good reason!

But isn't George's hands all over The Clone Wars? That's why these things get messed up. He over does it trying to 'link' two Trilogys, which, should be kept separate for the most part. (No, i'm not big on the idea of the 6 Star Wars movies as a "Saga".)

Original Trilogy over here -->
super-cool classic Y-Wing (original concept art by McQuarrie, no?)

<-- Prequel Trilogy over there
odd-looking mutant Pre-Y-Wing designed by some hack* to sell toys

(Ok, he's probably not a "hack" Wink , but you know what i mean...)

While I like the ship design, I'll agree it doesn't look very Republic-era. More like a Mark II version of the Y-Wing a few years after ROTJ.

And the Twilight (at least, general consensus is that it's the Twilight) is the packin. Neat.

At least they'll have one in a nice white/blue scheme for me. I hope they make that one a set. Wink

I know I am dredging up an old thread here, but what do you guys think of the ship now? Personally, I love it. It looks like it fits the dimensions of the original design perfectly, so that seems to have changed from the concept art.

Interestingly, its being described as a predecessor and not the actual Y-Wing from the OT. Although I like to think that it is. In my mind, its not out of question to assume that the same ship would be flying 20 years later.

Still don't like it. Wink But then again, I don't much like the OT Y-Wing either so I'm obviously skewed. I can say that the interior shots during the show were neat and really portrayed a nice ambience, particularly the moments with Ahsoka talking with Anakin and when the cockpits were bathed in the nebula's light.

The ship itself is just too boring-looking: I think one of the defining "it's just missing something" moments was, I believe, when the group was first flying into the nebula. There was a side-angle shot that panned with the ships when they flew by; they looked completely flat and devoid of any characteristic shot from that angle. To me, that "flatness" is a combination of poor design and boring aesthetics. Pair the unbroken flat silhouette with their super-long profile because of the engine length, you get a big, long, boring, uninteresting ship... At least the original Y-Wing had some "greebling" to make it a little more visually interesting.

(The kit-bash DonSolo linked to is still lightyears better, without a doubt.)

Interesting that you say that Morgan, I agree that it is rather ugly...and that is why it's my favorite fighter.

There is just something about that rather unflattering design that gives it alot of character and makes me just love it.

I personally dislike it. If the stripped down OT version still has all the elements of a functional starfighter, what have they got in the republic version that takes up so much extra space?

Armor plating? Fuel? Luggage racks?

Well, some of those clones were prima donnas, so they probably had to have a set of armor for all occasions with matching luggage... Very Happy

Well as RocketSeason said, for some reason it seemed much better in the show than it did in the concept art... but maybe that's just because we've had a lot of time to get used to it's horridness - kind of like the name Nintendo 'Wii'.

Here's a thought - the Y-wing is always described in the books as coming in both a single seater and two seater variant - but since we never get a confirmed look at the two seater in the OT, maybe it looks something more like this one. That extra room could be taken up by the larger life support system (oxygen, food, in-flight toilet, whatever) needed to keep an extra person alive, plus a larger engine to compensate for the extra weight.

Here is a link to my Flickr photo gallery full of Republic Y-Wing photos.

http://flickr.com/photos/rocketseason/sets/72157608098402281/

I have started putting together a model of it. Although I don't have the correct pieces to do it right. I am considering making a custom "ugly" ship that is "built" from the parts of a Republic Y-Wing. That way its heavily inspired by the original, but it becomes my own creation.

If any of you have seen the original Ep 4 movie theatre posters, you'll find the CW version of the Y-Wing in the poster not the version that appeared in the movie. The CW version appears to be a throw back to that concept drawing and maybe Lucas wanted to make that tie-in.

Bull. Unless you can come up with a poster to back you up, that's simply false. The original concept art for the Y-wing did have the bubble gunner seat, but not the distinctive goofy looking body of the Clone Wars version. The posters match the original y-wing or McQuarrie's similar concept art - but not this new style.

Personally I don't mind the look of the new CW one.
Is this the McQuarrie art you are referring to? Another here
