IMPORANT UPDATE NOTICE!

What? BothCon '08
When? Friday, October 3rd, 2008, noon to 1 PM
Where? Seattle Center Exhibition Hall, room TBA

Friday the 3rd is a non-public day. This means that you must be a registered attendee of the convention in order to attend. Sorry if I didn't make this clear earlier. If this in any way affects anyone who had previously said they will be attending (in other words, if you were simply planning on attending the convention on a public day as a guest), please reply to this post and let us know, so we can get a recount of who will be there. However, if it turns out that this means you in fact can't attend the BothCon session, don't worry. We still all wanna' meet you and hang out. When you do get to the convention, regardless of what day, track us down. We might be doing after hours stuff, and at the very least I'm sure we'll be goofing off together during the con, so, the more the merrier.

Also, coming to a BothCon near you:

      Operation: Infiltr8

Only attendees can participate in this little scheme, a full explanation will be given in person Friday. Should be fun. It's on.

How about a draft? The AT-AP might be a nice set for one.

Thank goodness Darkie and Ry's Wife are coming, this won't be too much of a sausage party.

1. Buy the set.

2. Sort the set.

3. Pick a number.

4. Go in order, and pick the bin with the part you want.

5. Repeat step four until all parts have been claimed.

Does that help any?

The draft takes a good hour and a half to two hours, though, depending on the size of the set and how many people are doing it.

OK, that makes more sense now. But yeah - we've only got an hour in that room so if we did a draft it would have to be another time...

There are secondary drafts all the time. Last year there were at least two drafts, only one being the "official" draft. That's Sunday, if I recall correctly.

There are times when the classrooms are empty. You'll have a copy of the schedule in your registration packet and may be able to snag an empty room another time over the weekend.

Heck, if someone wants to volunteer their hotel room, there's nothing to say it has to happen at the center.

Yeah, I'm not down with the Indy set they chose for a draft. Definitely interested in something else.

Ok, so if we were to do a draft of an AT-AP, who would like to be in. We're burning daylight here folks. hehe

$40, which is a bit steep for a draft, and my biggest beef with the Indy set they chose :\

That's my thinking. That's what's preventing me from participating I think in that draft.

I second that. Very Happy Seriously, we can use my hotel room, no problemo.

Fair warning, though: I'm a bit of a slob, so if you see any dirty underpants on the floor, feel free to kick them aside. Razz

Most of the cheaper price range Star Wars sets aren't that great for parts. Perhaps the spider droid? I guess it doesn't need to be a Star Wars set but I thought it most appropriate. Perhaps something in the Agents line? Swamp Raid maybe?

BothCon '08: official debriefing

Success! BothCon, held at BrickCon in Seattle, WA, on Oct 3rd, was great. The turnout wasn't as large as the main page poll would have had us believe it was gonna be, but that's actually a bit of a relief -- I don't think we'd have had enough pizza and soda to feed that many faces. Very Happy

BothCon was lucky enough to be given the very first session time slot of the convention, and that worked out really well. It was right at noon, which made it ideal for a lunchtime get together. DonSolo, GrandAdmiral and I stood out in the rain, on the curb outside of the exhibition hall, to wait for the delivery person to arrive. (I had a nice conversation with her, trying to direct her to where we were, and frantically waving her down as he rounded the corner.) But, everything arrived just fine, and we got everything set up in time for everyone to enjoy.

Steve Witt, or SpeakNSpell as you know him from the Ask LEGO forum, was there, too, to say a few words to the group, answer questions, and help us eat the pizza. Very Happy

Of course, we didn't just stuff our faces. We gave away free stuff, too. There were mini TIEs and other assorted small sets, plus a grand prize raffle for a $50 LEGO gift certificate. Ryan had a great idea for how to conduct the raffles. For BrickCon, I'd built and brought 11 custom Star Wars MOCs, of various characters from the Mos Eisley Cantina. So, Ry suggested that we take the heads off of them Very Happy, put the heads in a box, and have everyone draw one. And, this worked out perfectly, as there were exactly 11 people in attendance.

In addition, Don had a great activity in store for us all. By now, I'm sure you're all familiar with his M-8 droids. Well, for each of us, Don had a little bag containing three of them, and a mission for us to complete. The mission: take photos of the M-8 droids in the craziest and most interesting places, post them on flickr, and the photo that he deems the best will be the winner! Not only was it fun, but it was also very generous for Don to give out these little droids for free.

Overall, BothCon was a terrific chance for each of us to meet fellow Bothans face-to-face. And, because of this, I ended up spending more time with these great people throughout the convention, I'm sure, than I would have had I not had the chance to get to know them right at the start. I absolutely look forward to the chance to organize more of these BothCons at any future conventions that I attend.

FBTB is a place where many of us have made some really terrific friends over the years. But, as fun as it is to interact with each other online, that's nothing compared to being able to spend time together in real life. Thus, I'm so very grateful for all the assistance receiaved from all the great people who made this 1st BothCon a reality. Smile

Hopefully the next one will be a little more closer to the Chicago area. Because, I live in Chicago. Also, I can't really go too far from Chicago. Hint Hint

A few aren't Bothans, and Chase is there somewhere, and Nannan should be.
